The car is an unmistakable expression of one´s own personality – that is the philosophy of Audi exclusive. Since 1995, the brand with the four rings has been setting standards in the personalization of premium vehicles in keeping with this motto. An early example of this pioneering spirit was the Office packages for the first-generation Audi A8, which included a refrigerator, bar compartment, VHS player and monitor, folding table, and power curtains.

 

The ability to integrate high-demand design options directly into production has improved significantly in recent years. While the standard range for most Audi models boasts up to eleven colors, Audi exclusive allows customers to choose from an even broader spectrum of additional finishes, including a variety of special Audi exclusive finishes and standard colors from other Audi models. Different markets show different preferences among a range of nuances, from matte to gloss finishes in a wide range of colors.

The Audi exclusive portfolio covers three main areas: full personalization, predefined design and stitching packages, and editions. Customers can choose from a range of eight main finishes for the interior, complemented by three accent colors – Alaska Blue, Iguana Green, and Calendula Yellow. They are showcased perfectly in the Bicolor packages for the Audi e-tron GT, for example. “We want to allow everyone to design their Audi to be as individual as they are,” says Michael Binder from the Audi exclusive Product Marketing team. “Every one of our customers wants to express themselves with their Audi – without saying a word. With the color and material combinations and our many years of experience, we help customers express their personality and individual style through their car.”

Successes and developments in customer service

Since 2005, Audi exclusive has emphasized its presence with its studios at the Audi Forum in Neckarsulm and Ingolstadt. Customers there receive comprehensive advice and enjoy direct access to the wide range of design options on offer. With the knowledge of their product experts, these centers of excellence are open to customers from all over the world to help them realize their preferences and personal vision. The entire spectrum of customization options can be experienced live on site, and tailor-made solutions are created in personal conversations.

A significant innovation was the introduction in 2022 of the Audi exclusive customizer*. This visualization tool provides detailed 3D renderings of thousands of exterior and interior color combinations, giving customers a taste of the virtually limitless customization possibilities.

Car enthusiasts will find the right range of exclusive and limited design-oriented elements for luxury and mid-range models at Audi exclusive. Customers of Audi exclusive value autonomy, luxury, high-quality materials, precise manufacturing and sustainability. On average, one in five Audi R8s delivered by Audi featured a personalized interior by Audi exclusive, making the R8 the most frequently equipped car by Audi exclusive to date.

A current example of this special individuality is the Audi of Canadian racecar driver Jacques Villeneuve, whose characteristic helmet design is reflected in his Audi RS 6 Avant2. His car was given a pink body, blue brake calipers, yellow stitching, green JV logos embroidered on the seats, and red seat belts to create an unmistakable overall appearance.

The new Audi e-tron GT as a platform for creative innovations

With the introduction of the new S e-tron GT3, RS e-tron GT4, and RS e-tron GT performance5, Audi exclusive is setting benchmarks for the personalization of electric vehicles. The only Audi model to be built at Böllinger Höfe, the Audi e-tron GT family represents the Neckarsulm site, while the performance variant is the sporty flagship of the Audi portfolio. Audi is using the debut of the new electric Gran Turismo to introduce innovative, customized options from Audi exclusive. Through sophisticated elegance and advanced technology, the electric Gran Turismo is the perfect symbiosis of performance and high tech. With a wide range of finishes and materials, Audi exclusive allows customers to design their e-tron GT model to be one of a kind.

At market launch: e-tron GT models as an Audi exclusive edition

All three model variants of the new Audi e-tron GT are also available as a 299-unit limited Audi exclusive edition in North America, Europe, and other overseas markets. Since the creative minds at Audi find inspiration everywhere in their environment, it is no surprise that the Audi Design team turned to nature and its constant change to inspire the new worlds of color on offer. Like a kind of design sculpture, each new Audi e-tron GT is meant to always look exciting and fresh from every perspective. Color and trim designer Christopher Kroener was inspired by the subtle ways that nature changes temperature and light throughout the day. “Our choice of colors was not for a specific tone per se, but rather an emotional approach to the possibility of reproducing a fleeting moment of nature,” explains Kroener. Inspired by morning dew, Mint Gray evokes the fresh feeling of a morning walk, while Mora Violet provides a stylish contrast that reflects a strong, modern aesthetic.

Combined with creativity, an affinity for trends, and technical expertise, the new materials on offer help the new worlds of color make a stirring impact.

Exterior highlights in Arabica Gray and matte Neodymium Gold

One unmistakable feature of the series is the expressive exterior finish in Arabica Gray. Daytona Gray Pearl Effect, a very popular classic, inspired the color. Arabica Gray is versatile and premium quality. When viewed in the shade, the tone appears dark, but it takes on a golden hue when viewed in the light. This mix of brown, gold, and gray is unique. The luster of the finish is reminiscent of roasted coffee beans, and depending on the lighting, it can take on a unique depth and sophistication.

Based on the new 6 double-spoke RS design, the progressive wheel design of the Audi exclusive edition is available for the first time in black, matte Neodymium Gold, and burnished silver. This three-tone look echoes the bold hue of the Arabica Gray finish and elevates the appearance of the exterior to perfection. Metallic Neodymium underlines the car’s sporty elegance and exclusivity. “I took a new approach to the design of the different wheels, deliberately choosing not to use a dark aluminum and instead opting for a warmer variation that systematically reflects the gold particles in the Arabica Gray finish,” says wheel designer Andreas Valencia Pollex. “A vehicle’s wheels can harmoniously complement or radically change its overall look, just like your choice of shoes can complete your entire outfit.” During development, the wheel colors evolved from silver through black and bronze to their final iteration in bright gold. The desire for conspicuous elegance resulted in the increased use of matte Neodymium Gold. This extraordinary wheel color was first available for the RS 6 Avant performance6.

Interior highlights in Mint Gray and Mora Violet

The distribution of its colors gives the leather-free interior the appearance of a four-seater, but it legally seats five. The seats’ center panels, shoulder arches, and side bolsters come in Mint Gray to contrast with the Mora Violet areas. This is the first time that Audi exclusive has used these new colors. As a particular highlight, the decorative inlays on the instrument panel come in eucalyptus wood (in addition to carbon variations) trimmed in anthracite, which is used in this way for the first time. Eucalyptus is known for its characteristic look, created by the dense grain of light and dark waves. The distinctive Sport seats plus ensure maximum comfort. They are optionally available with ventilation and massage functions, either alone or in combination. The seats are upholstered in a combination of Cascade fabric, Dinamica microfiber, and Mono.pur 550 artificial leather with special waterfall stitching. Details such as door inserts in Mint Gray Dinamica microfiber with Audi exclusive badges, color-coordinated loudspeaker grilles, and switch covers, as well as color-coordinated seat belts, steering wheel, and floor mats round out the interior as an expressive statement.

Virtual environments

As part of the Audi exclusive edition, Audi is also making personalization possible in the digital world. Instead of an embossed number badge, the MMI indicates each limited model’s sequential number. Edition-specific MMI wallpaper with color-coordinated ambient lighting completes the digital experience. All previous MMI designs remain available along with these new features and can be freely selected by customers as before.

Individual customizations for the new Audi e-tron GT

In addition, Audi exclusive offers other packages that transform the interior into an expression of the customer’s personality through the use of contrasting colors. The two-tone Audi exclusive Bicolor design package is particularly noteworthy, combining fascinating charisma and differentiating colors. Interested customers can choose from four predefined interiors: Alaska Blue, Calendula Yellow, Iguana Green, or Crimson Red, each in combination with black. Contrasting stitching, exclusive leather accents on interior elements, and the air vent frames are color-coordinated with the selected package.

On the other hand, the Cognac Brown / Jet Gray design package sets a timeless accent characterized by an elegant command of style. The premium quality of the fine Cognac Brown Nappa leather, combined with subtle Jet Gray contrast stitching, gives the interior a sporty look with an understated touch. It stands as a stylish contrast to the vivid Bicolor packages.

For more intense color variations, the Audi exclusive stitching packages allow customers to choose distinctive stitching colors for a range of interior applications in combination with black leather to give their vehicle a sporty touch. What all the packages have in common is attention to detail, maximum precision, and the highest quality, all of which combine to give the interior a truly personal appearance.

In addition to these packages, which have been predefined by Audi design experts and will be expanded throughout the product’s lifecycle, another highlight is free personalization, which allows Audi exclusive customers to express their personal style on numerous interior components. These personalization offers have been in high demand since the launch of the Audi e-tron GT. The steering wheel is the most frequently personalized component, with 30% of all personalization requests, followed by the floor mats with 22%. The predefined design packages were used 16% of the time, a significant portion of the total Audi exclusive offering.

The creative minds at Audi will have no shortage of ideas going forward. Current developments in the field of digitalization point to a future where traditional design elements will increasingly blend with virtual immersion. This opens up new dimensions for customized experiences and increases the impact of the offerings. With an exceptionally low Cd value of 0.21, the Audi A6 Sportback e-tron1 is the most aerodynamic Audi of all time and leads the entire VW Group in its segment in terms of aerodynamics. The A6 Avant e-tron2 also achieves an excellent Cd value of 0.24, placing it at the top of its body segment. Aerodynamics developers Andreas Lauterbach and Matteo Ghelfi and wheel designer Andreas Valencia Pollex explain how they achieved the record value with meticulous attention to detail.

 

Aerodynamics has always played a key role in Audi’s long history of success. As far back as 1967, the NSU Ro 80 had an aerodynamic, wedge-shaped body with a Cd value of 0.35 that changed automotive design forever. The third-generation Audi 100 (C3), introduced in the summer of 1982, boasted a Cd value of 0.30, which was exceptional for its time. Right on its heels, the third-generation Audi 80 (B3) continued this success story with a drag value of 0.29. Now, the Audi A6 e-tron12 is writing a new chapter, proving once again that Audi always combines form and function in a perfect symbiosis.

“Around 2,800 simulations and countless hours in the wind tunnel.”

“From the very start of the project, we placed a high value on efficiency and range and pursued very ambitious goals, regarding the A6 e-tron12. To be honest, in the beginning, we weren’t sure if we would be able to achieve the values we were aiming for. Getting to that last thousandth of a Cd value is the hardest part, but in the end, we exceeded our goals,” Lauterbach recalls.

The outstanding result was achieved primarily through “excellent teamwork between us (Aerodynamics experts) and our colleagues in Design. We all pulled together. From the beginning of the project, the Designers shared their drafts with us so that we could provide initial aerodynamic evaluations. In an iterative process – firstly using virtual simulations and later the physical model in the wind tunnel – we went on to optimize the basic vehicle body.

In particular, the basic proportions with the slim greenhouse and the sloping roofline contribute to good aerodynamics.”

Lauterbach and Ghelfi devoted considerable time to working on the details with their colleagues in the Design team. Ghelfi: “In all, we ran around 2,800 simulations on the car and spent countless hours in the wind tunnel and in meetings collaborating with surface experts and designers. For example, air curtains are used to improve the airflow around the front of the car. The outside edge of the air curtain intake protruded somewhat, which impeded the airflow. Millimeter by millimeter, we reached a compromise that ultimately worked out for both sides.” Lauterbach adds: “Another example is the rear track width. Our team would have liked it to be narrower. Together, we found a solution that brought out the best in terms of design, dimensions, and aerodynamics.” Ghelfi: “Regarding aerodynamics, the aero bezels were particularly important. The lateral breakaway edges on the rear of the A6 Avant e-tron2 made it possible to achieve a clearly defined flow stall. They are significantly larger than in other Audi cars. Working in the wind tunnel with our Design colleagues, we carefully pored over each side's respective arguments and strived to find the best solution. The result is that the aero bezels alone improve the range by 0.008, equivalent to eight kilometers. That’s a significant advantage to come from a single design detail.”

 

“Looking at the car overall, neither side had to make any major compromises. When all was said and done, and I called my colleague in Design to tell him that together we had achieved the Cd value of 0.21 for the A6 Sportback e-tron1, he could hardly believe it,” recounts Lauterbach proudly.

 

“Every detail fine-tuned to the last millimeter.”

Achieving these top Cd values for the A6 Sportback e-tron1 and Avant e-tron* demanded considerable attention to detail. The switchblade cool-air intake under the Singleframe alone, which helps the air to flow around this area with few losses, realized a Cd advantage of 0.012, equivalent to about 12 kilometers.Lauterbach: “The underfloor also plays a significant role in a car’s aerodynamic performance. On the A6 Sportback e-tron1, we added radii, optimized stiffening ribs, and breakaway edges at critical points. The rear diffuser is another element crucial to aerodynamics: Due to the smooth underfloor, this part is exposed to direct airflow, and pressure recovery has a positive effect on the Cd value.”

Ghelfi adds: “The underfloor is largely finished, and we’ve fine-tuned many of its parts, including specially adapted wheel spoilers and 3D bumpers on the front wheels, each of which has been individually optimized for the Sportback and Avant models using CFD analysis, which improves the Cd by 0.002 and 0.009 according to wind tunnel measurements. The large underfloor cover (the engine undershield) in the front of the car was optimized by adding a large radius on the air outlet; the rocker panel and the rear axle have been largely covered. These are just a few examples. We looked at practically each individual radius. We were able to achieve all these optimizations thanks to excellent teamwork with the project leaders, system team leaders, component managers, and designers.”

Lauterbach explains the overall concept this way: “The balance between the basic shape, rear height, rear contours, and underfloor design impact not only the car’s Cd value but also its lift. We achieved an ideal balance between lift and Cd by fine-tuning the underfloor as described.” Ghelfi adds: “The Avant has an additional diffuser spoiler that compensates for the fundamental difference in aerodynamics between the Sportback and Avant silhouettes, which means that the underfloor airflow differs for the two A6 e-tron derivatives12. This is another reason the Avant uses wider 3D bumpers to improve airflow around the front wheels.”

“Practically all of the wheels for the A6 e-tron12 are designed for aerodynamics”

The aero optimizations that some of the different-sized wheels feature round off the aerodynamics concept of the Audi A6 e-tron12. Rim designer Andreas Valencia Pollex: “Formerly, wheels basically only had to meet stability requirements. Today, we develop and design intelligent aero wheels that are as efficient as possible because the wheels, and even the tires, have a major impact on the range of an electric car.” The A6 e-tron* has special 19” aero wheels and two special 20” aero wheels.


Valencia Pollex continues: “To achieve perfect aerodynamics, the rims had to be somewhat flat so that the air that hits the front of the car is directed sideways around the body without much turbulence. We want the wind to flow along a wall rather than a collection of geometric shapes. So, we also developed a 21” wheel with aero blades made from special plastic for the A6 e-tron12.”

Lauterbach adds: “If you look at the whole range of wheels, the best and the worst wheels in terms of aerodynamics are only 0.015 Cd apart. That means that practically every wheel is designed for maximum aerodynamics.”

Audi is continuing its model campaign. “The Audi Q5 has represented the success of Audi for more than 15 years,” says CEO Gernot Döllner. “With the third generation of our most successful SUV, we will now begin rejuvenating our SUV portfolio with efficient combustion engine models and hybrid versions.”

Audi will launch more than 20 new models in 2024 and 2025 – over 10 of them electric. This year, the new electric models commenced with the Audi Q6 e-tron in the spring and the Audi A6 e-tron in late July. At the same time, the company is rejuvenating its portfolio with combustion engine models like the A5 family unveiled in July.

The Audi Q5 SUV has been one of the most popular SUVs in the midsize-segment in Germany and Europe for more than 15 years. Audi is now presenting the latest generation of the bestseller: the Q5, which is even more modern and dynamic. It is the first SUV based on the PPC and is powered by petrol and diesel engines that have become even more economical thanks to MHEV plus technology. The Q5 impresses with a modern and infotainment system and operation concept, customizable digital light signatures and modern driver assistance systems. The sporty Audi SQ52 complements the new model series at its premiere. In future, models with plug-in hybrid technology will expand the model family.

 

Gernot Döllner, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, sees the new Audi Q5 SUV as a guarantee of success: "The Audi Q5 has been our most successful and most important SUV model in the midsize class for more than 15 years. The new edition is a further development of its proven characteristics," says Gernot Döllner. "As the second model in our new generation of highly efficient combustion engines, it marks the next important step in the rejuvenation of our portfolio. I am certain that the new Audi Q5, as a sporty all-rounder with a dynamic SUV design, will continue its success story."

With the new Q5, Audi is launching the third generation of its successful model. The first generation of the midsize SUV was launched in 2008 and has dominated the premium brand segment ever since. The new Audi Q5 now continues this success story.

As the second model in the portfolio, the Q5 SUV is based – like the new Audi A5 models – on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC). The platform allows Audi to launch high-volume models with high technical standards in different segments. The flexibility of the PPC helps Audi give future models a unique character.

The Audi Q5 sets new standards in the midsize-segment of premium SUVs: sporty, technology-oriented design language meets high variability and proven suitability for everyday use. Efficient and powerful engines with MHEV plus technology, and later also plug-in hybrids, represent Audi's path to becoming a provider of future-proof premium mobility. With the E³ 1.2 electronics architecture, Audi is integrating modern and future-proof connectivity and digitalization features into all new models.

Audi has been manufacturing the Q5 models in Mexico for eight years now, and also produces the new Q5 in San José Chiapa. The proximity to the North American market is an important factor here. With this model, Audi begins the renewal of its SUV portfolio with combustion engines and partially electrified variants.

Practical: space concept and variability

The latest generation of the new Audi Q5 has gained significantly in key product attributes – and occupants can feel this from the very first time they experience it. In combination with the new interior concept, the result is a comfortable feeling of space with ample head and legroom.

A particularly practical feature of the Audi Q5 SUV is the fully adjustable rear seat. It can be moved lengthways and tilted, thus increasing the trunk volume or comfort for rear passengers as required. At the same time, three people can be comfortably seated on the rear bench. With the rear seats folded down, the transport volume increases to up to 1,473 liters, depending on the model variant. The luggage compartment cover can be stowed in a specially designed compartment under the luggage compartment floor. This provides even more space for luggage and a secure place for the cover.

Other practical features include an even larger storage compartment under the center armrest compared to the previous model, numerous smaller storage areas for sunglasses, keys and other everyday items, an inductive and cooled charging tray with 15 watts of charging power in the front center console, two USB-C ports in the front, and two in the rear. As an option, the USB ports at the front can support charging capacities of up to 60 watts; the rear ports can even support charging capacities of up to 100 watts. This means larger devices such as laptops can be safely supplied with power while driving.

Purism and dynamism: the exterior design

The third generation of the Q5 SUV models has become even sportier and offers perfect proportions. The taut and high shoulder line creates a powerful silhouette, connects the front and rear lights, and makes the vehicle appear longer. Above the sill, a rising line runs over the wheel arches and into the rear bumper, giving the vehicle a dynamic appearance even when stationary.

The front is self-confident, as all the defining design elements are positioned one level higher than in the predecessor model. The sporty, wide Singleframe sits high and is flanked by vertical, functional air curtains.

The strongly filed and sculpturally shaped headlights create a sharp, focused look, manifesting the agile and self-confident character of the car right from the front. A large air intake with sensors sits under the Singleframe, giving the Q5 a visually full and wide stance on the road.The exterior S line impresses with striking and sporty body components, such as the Air Curtain Tubes with matt anthracite chrome-look accents. On the S model, these elements have a matt silver chrome look.

The rear of the Q5 SUV has an extremely clear design thanks to the maximum reduction of lines. From the rear window to the lower edge of the three-dimensional shaped light strip, there is a smooth surface, defined by the light strip with a sharp cut across the entire width of the vehicle. The area between the light strip and bumper is kept sleek and gives the SUV a sporty elegance. The diffuser is integrated into the raised bumpers as an island. The positioning and shape of the functional tailpipes depends on the engine: a double square tailpipe under the diffuser on the left-hand side (for all diesel engines), or rectangular tailpipes on the right and left (for all petrol engines). The S model features the four iconic twin round tailpipes in a new, sharpened design.

Three conformation characteristics and eleven colors

Three versions are available: basic, advanced exterior and S line exterior. In addition, the S model is given an independent exterior appearance. In the S line exterior and the S model, the front air intakes are larger and designed as aero tubes in an L-wing shape. The diffuser at the rear is significantly sportier. The black exterior package is also available for the exterior S line and the S model.

There is a choice of eleven colors for the new Audi Q5 models, including the Arkona White solid paint finish. Glacier White, Mythos black, Floret Silver, Navarra Blue, Grenadine Red, District Green and the new color Tambora Gray are available as metallic paint finishes. Ultra Blue metallic, Daytona Grey pearl effect and the new Sakhir Gold metallic are available exclusively for the S models or vehicles with exterior S line. Particularly high-quality and, depending on the customer's wishes, personally configurable individual paint finishes from Audi exclusive are also available for the Q5 models.

The new Audi Q5 SUV models on the German market are equipped with alloy wheels in sizes from 17 to 21 inches, depending on the exterior and engine. Aerodynamically optimized wheels are available as an option for sizes between 17 and 19 inches. The S line exterior and the S model come with 19-inch wheels as standard.

Forged 21-inch wheels in S design, which are familiar from other S vehicles, are available as an option. The optional 21-inch tricolor wheel is the extravagant highlight of the wheel range.

Clean lines and a welcoming ambience: the interior design

The design of the interior of the new Audi Q5 SUV is based on the four characteristic basic features of Audi interior design. Firstly, the interior is designed to be "human-centric", i.e., consistently geared towards the needs of its users.

The clear layout of the interior provides overview and forms the second basic feature, "visual clarity". Functionality and aesthetics are combined down to the last detail. This clear design approach is evident in the horizontal structure of the control panel: an application made of high-quality material extends like a wing across the entire width of the control panel and rises at the transitions to the doors. The control panel forms the basis for the "Digital Stage" and for the form-fit integrated air vents. The consistent design of the center console and doors complements the orchestration of the interior: components in aluminum look and C-clamp shape surround the controls in the doors and center console. With their ascending alignment, they emphasize the robust and sporty SUV philosophy of the Audi Q5.

The central component of the interior is the "Digital Stage", which is set up in front of the driver and front passenger in the form of the Audi MMI displays. The clearly aligned displays are integrated into the interior with a perfect fit. The slim, free-standing Audi MMI panoramic display has a curved design and OLED technology and houses the 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit and the 14.5-inch MMI touch display.

The 10.9-inch MMI Passenger Display can be ordered specially for front passengers. Thanks to Active Privacy Mode with shutter technology, passengers can use the infotainment system undisturbed without the driver being visually distracted. At the same time, it offers the option of assisting the driver with navigation tasks, for example.

With its "Material Driven Design", the new Audi Q5 meets the demand for a spacious feeling with a high level of comfort. As a counterbalance to the digital and technical areas, the so-called soft wrap element runs from door to door across the entire width of the dashboard. Together with the fabric panels in the door and the armrests, this creates a homely ambience. This philosophy of material-driven design also offers the potential to individualize the interior according to your own ideas.

The materials were selected from a functional point of view, and at the same time ensure clear design differentiation between the various areas in the interior. Comfort-oriented areas are emphasized with generous surfaces and soft materials.

In contrast, controls are precisely designed and optionally finished in high-quality high-gloss black. The seats with diamond quilting, the soft wrap, the door mirrors, and the armrest in the sporty S line version are finished in the sustainable materials Kaskade and Dinamica, among others. The Kaskade textile upholstery is reminiscent of natural materials such as wool and is not additionally dyed. It is made from recycled materials such as selvedges and recycled polyester. Part of the cover is made from the fabric Impressum, which consists partly of recycled plastic fibers. Dinamica looks and feels like suede, but almost half of it is made from recycled polyester, one of the sources of which is leftover textiles.

Dynamic interaction light

The clearly designed interior of the Q5 SUV is also highlighted in the dark. The contour light in the dashboard and doors emphasizes the width of the interior, while the indirect light below the Curved Audi MMI Panorama Display and in the center console creates a visual floating effect. The high-quality materials in the doors are illuminated to great effect. Added to this is the dynamic interaction light (IAL), which spans the entire width of the interior as an LED light strip and supports the occupants' interaction with the vehicle. On the one hand, the IAL serves to showcase the interior and offers, for example, a welcome function or indicates when the vehicle is locked and unlocked. On the other, it provides support when it comes to safety: for example, the dynamic indicator light is visualized. This enhances the display in the Virtual Cockpit. The IAL always remains an additional display and does not replace the turn signals in the Virtual Cockpit. The dynamic interaction light is part of the ambient lighting package plus.

Aerodynamics and aeroacoustics

The aerodynamics and aeroacoustics of the new Audi Q5 SUV have been optimized with a variety of detailed solutions. The clad underbody and the aerodynamically designed front and rear sections play an important role in the aerodynamics concept. Air curtains are used to channel the airflow and direct it past the wheel arch so that it flows around the front wheels and the sides of the vehicle with as little turbulence as possible.

In addition, the airflow is directed around the front wheels by the air deflectors. The extensively covered underbody guides the airflow under the vehicle with reduced turbulence. Lateral Aero panels at the rear of the vehicle ensure a clear separation of the air, which is directed over the bodywork. The deep roof spoiler also contributes to this. The exterior mirrors have also been aerodynamically optimized.

The aeroacoustics of the new Q5 SUV are also of a high standard. The windshield is fitted with acoustic glazing as standard. To further enhance driving comfort, the front side windows are also available with acoustic glazing on request.

Impressive by day and night: the lighting design

With the new Audi Q5 SUV, Audi not only underlines its leading role in lighting design and technology, but also goes one step further. The rear lights have a three-dimensional design, spectacularly bringing together the physical and digital worlds in combination with the light strip, which spans the entire width of the vehicle.

At the rear, the strikingly designed second-generation digital OLED rear lights and the projection light in the spoiler above the rear window, used for the first time in Europe, deliver increased safety. It projects a graphic into the upper rear window area, thereby enlarging the brake light area. It is also integrated into the Coming Home and Leaving Home scene when leaving and unlocking the vehicle.In the case of the second-generation digital OLED combination rearlights, the six digital OLED panels with a total of 266 segments generate a new image several times per second using a specially developed algorithm.

The active digital light signature also signifies the future of Audi lighting technology. At the front, the active digital light signature is created by the interaction of the algorithm with fifteen segments that dim up and down. The individual light segments interact in such a way that the overall appearance of the light signature does not vary in terms of light intensity. "In the Audi Q5, we design not only the shape of the light in a series-production vehicle, but its entire movement. Thanks to the symbiosis between our lighting design and the new technology, the light of the Q5 appears livelier than ever before. We have given the light signature its own personality and the digital world its own aesthetics at the same time," explains César Muntada, Head of Lighting Design. "With the active digital light signature, the new Q5 continues an era of unique design and aesthetics that can only be found at Audi."

With the digital OLED combination rearlights 2.0, the Q5 raises the lighting design, range of functions and therefore safety in its class to a new level. For the first time, the second-generation digital OLED combination rearlights can communicate with the vehicle’s immediate surroundings (Car-to-X) in a targeted manner. Proximity detection, which was first introduced in 2020, has been expanded in the new Q5 to include the communication light. It warns other road users of accidents and breakdowns. In addition to the regular tail light graphic, it displays a specific static tail light signature with integrated warning symbols in the digital OLED combination rearlight in critical driving or traffic situations.

The technology also sets new standards in terms of individualization. With – depending on equipment – up to eight digital light signatures in the redesigned daytime running lights of the Matrix LED headlights and in the digital OLED tail lights 2.0, drivers can personalize their Q5 in a completely new way. A specially designed Coming Home and Leaving Home scene is available for each digital light signature when leaving and unlocking the vehicle.

Ultra-modern combustion engines with MHEV plus

The new Audi Q5 SUV family is based on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), a platform architecture for conventionally powered vehicles with longitudinally installed combustion engines. All models in the Q5 series at market launch are equipped with the highly efficient MHEV plus technology.

The new MHEV plus system with 48-volt electrical system supports the combustion engine, reduces CO2 emissions and at the same time increases performance and driving comfort. Purely electric maneuvering and parking are also possible to a limited extent.

The powertrain generator (PTG) generates an additional drive torque of up to 230 Newton meters and up to 18 kW (24 hp) of power. The 48-volt system also enables the use of an electrically driven air conditioning compressor. This offers the advantage that even when the engine is switched off – for example when coasting or at a red light – the air conditioning system continues to operate at full power and keeps the interior at a comfortable temperature.

The lithium-ion battery of the vehicles with MHEV plus is based on lithium iron phosphate chemistry (LFP) and has a storage capacity of 1.7 kilowatt hours. The main tasks of the belt starter generator are to start the engine and supply electrical energy to the battery. The new powertrain generator (PTG) enables electric driving, relieves the combustion engine, and helps reduce fuel consumption. When decelerating, the powertrain generator (TSG) feeds up to 25 kW of energy back into the battery (recuperation). The PPC enables gradual electrification in the form of mild hybrids. Later in the lifecycle of the new Audi Q5, plug-in hybrids with a large battery and external charging option will also follow.

Three engine versions at market launch

In Europe, the Audi Q5 SUV models will be launched with three engine versions, with further drive variants to follow. At market launch, all variants will be equipped with MHEV plus technology, which can provide up to 18 kW (24 PS) of additional power for short periods. All models use the 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission.

The entry-level engine is the 2.0 TFSI. It delivers 150 kW (204 PS)3, 340 Newton meters of maximum torque and is equipped with front-wheel drive. As an option quattro all-wheel drive is also available.

The Audi Q5 is available with the 2.0 TDI in the EA288 evo generation. It delivers 150 kW (204 PS)4 and 400 Newton meters of torque and is only available with quattro all-wheel drive.

Audi is offering the Audi SQ51 as the top model in the series at market launch. The V6 TFSI with a displacement of three liters produces 270 kW and has a maximum torque of 550 Newton meters.

Agile handling and comfort

The new Audi Q5 SUV offers driving characteristics typical of the brand, with largely neutral handling, and achieves a noticeable increase in comfort thanks to its optimized suspension and steering set-up.

It rolls off the production line with dynamically tuned steel suspension as standard. Alternatively, a sports suspension (standard on the Audi SQ51) is available. The steel spring suspension, in combination with the passive damping system FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) and a more agile front axle, gives the Q5 an even firmer ride on the road. FSD reduces damping forces, particularly at high frequencies – for example on cobblestones – and maintains high damping forces at low frequencies, such as those that occur when changing lanes or cornering. Adaptive damper control is available in the optional air suspension. The basic configuration of this air suspension can be adapted to individual requirements via Audi drive select. Compared to the predecessor model, it offers a much more noticeable spread between comfort and sport mode. The new Q5 is offered with enhanced progressive steering as standard.

The latest generation of driver assistance systems

Audi provides a wide range of driver assistance systems in the new Q5 models, whose functions significantly improve everyday life and road safety for all road users. A rear parking aid with distance display, cruise control and speed limiter, lane departure warning, efficiency assistant and attention and drowsiness assistant are standard from market launch.

Additional assistance packages with numerous features can be configured as an option. These include, for example, the Adaptive Driving Assistant plus, which uses high-resolution map data and swarm data from other vehicles calculated in the cloud to optimize traffic sign recognition and assist with acceleration, maintaining speed and distance as well as lane guidance. Active Front Assist combines four assistance functions: Front Emergency Brake Assist, Evasion Assist, Turn Assist, and Front Cross Traffic Assist. Other assistance systems available include traffic sign-based cruise control, Park Assist plus and Rear Turn Assist.

Display and operating concept

The Audi Q5 model series has a fully networked digital interior based on the new electronics architecture. With the Audi MMI panoramic display and the MMI passenger display, the Digital Stage is a key feature of the interior. This also includes the 10.9-inch MMI passenger display with Active Privacy Mode. This technology prevents drivers from being distracted while driving by only showing the contents of the display to the front passenger. Only a black screen is visible to the driver.

The learning voice assistant, the Audi assistant, can be used to control numerous vehicle functions. The digital assistant with AI support is integrated into the vehicle and is depicted for the first time by an avatar in the central touch display of the MMI and in the head-up display. An icon in the instrument display shows the status of the Audi assistant.

Smart infotainment system

The infotainment system of the Audi Q5 SUV uses Android Automotive OS as its operating system. Content is updated via over-the-air updates. The latest Audi connect services are therefore always up to date. Apps such as YouTube are available via the store for third-party apps, which is integrated directly into the MMI and does not require a smartphone to use.

The heart of the Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System is a highly efficient amplifier. It drives 16 loudspeakers with 685 watts of power. The A-pillar and mid-range speakers produce an incomparable 3D surround sound. The "Symphoria" technology developed by the Fraunhofer Institute makes an important contribution to this. It adds sound dimensions that are important for a natural sound image: width, depth, and height. This creates a feeling of spaciousness in the car.

Compared to the Audi sound system, the Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System works with Vehicle Noise Compensation (VNC), which compensates for interior noise. Customers also have the option of expanding their sound experience at any time with features that can be added accordingly via Functions on Demand.

Individually configurable: the head-up display

The Audi Q5 is optionally available with a configurable Head-Up Display (HUD). The HUD can display a wide range of information in a clear and concise manner, such as speed, assistance systems, navigation instructions or media data. In the new Audi Q5, drivers have the option of controlling vehicle and infotainment functions via the head-up display. The controls also allow scrolling through lists with direct selection via steering wheel buttons – a first.

This makes it even easier for drivers to select recent destinations without taking their eyes off the road. Incoming calls can also be shown in the Head-Up Display and answered directly by the driver using the steering wheel button. In addition, corresponding menus in the HUD show the last calls made. This makes it much easier to select frequently recurring calls. Media is also controlled via the HUD: in entertainment mode, drivers can select their favorite radio station or podcast, for example, using the list control.

Sustainable production in Mexico

The new Audi Q5 family will be produced at the Audi site in San José Chiapa, Mexico. As the electrification of the PPC portfolio progresses, the partially electrified plug-in hybrid variants will also be produced there later. As part of the "360factory" production strategy, Audi is placing a strong focus on sustainability, among other things. The plant in San José Chiapa is characterized by resource-conserving production and is a role model for sustainable water use. Audi México is also on the home stretch to CO2-neutral production1.

The site is the first automotive plant in the world to be certified according to the standards of the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) for its efficient water management. This certification is the result of many measures for the sustainable use of water, including a reverse osmosis system and the collection of rainwater in a dedicated lagoon. In total, the plant saves 150,000 cubic meters of water per year, the equivalent of 60 Olympic swimming pools.

Thanks to efficient waste management, the recycling rate for waste generated at the plant is more than 90%. In addition to recycling materials such as metal offcuts from the press shop, the site also focuses on consistently avoiding plastic waste when packaging components. The experts on site have developed alternatives to the usual plastic packaging in order to minimize the use of disposable materials.

Market launch and prices

The new Audi Q5 SUV and Audi SQ5 SUV1 will be launched in Germany and numerous other European countries in the first quarter 2025. The Audi Q5 family will be available to order in Germany from September 2024. Prices for the new models start at 52,300 euros for the Audi Q5 SUV TFSI 150 kW3.

The Audi Q5 SUV TFSI quattro 150 kW5 costs from 54,650 euros; the diesel-powered Audi Q5 TDI quattro 150 kW4 starts at 57,100 euros.

Audi Sport has heightened the senses of the RS 31, 2. With the upgrade, the compact top model, which represents maximum performance, will become even sportier. This is visible at first glance: The strong lines at the front, the wheels in motorsport design, and the RS bucket seats visually enhance the dynamics, acoustically underscored by the deep-throated roar of the five-cylinder engine with its signature firing sequence. The 2.5 TFSI, combined with the optimized chassis setup and new tires, propels the RS 31, 2 around corners even more spirited. The new lap record on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife confirms this. Drivers can feel the increased driving dynamics and the high-quality materials, which exude the highest quality and make the Audi RS 31, 2 an experience for the senses.

 

SEEING: sporty, striking design visually evokes performance

After its product upgrade, the Audi RS 31, 2 has a significantly sportier appearance. The dominant feature of the assertive front design is the hexagonal Singleframe with a striking border. Flatter and considerably broader than before, it emphasizes the dynamics of the compact sports car with its voluminous rhombus-pattern grille. The same goes for the two functional side air intakes – accentuated by vertical black blades – and the three apertures above the front splitter, which now spans the entire vehicle breadth and lets the RS 31, 2 sit even lower – reminiscent of the Audi Sport quattro S1 Pikes Peak from 1987. With redesigned daytime running lights, the headlights also accentuate the car’s performance. The digital signature, which displays a checkered flag in the RS 31, 2, comprises 24 elements. Furthermore, in combination with the matrix LED headlights, drivers can choose between three additional daytime running light designs in the MMI touch display for the first time.

The rear of the RS 31, 2 also features references to motorsport and has a much stronger presence than before. Vertical side reflectors continue the design theme of the air intakes at the front. The large functional RS-specific diffuser incorporates a red reflector in its center and, on its sides, the two oval tailpipe trims of the RS exhaust system, which look even larger in their black frames.

Like the headlights, the taillights also feature a new graphic: Arrows that dynamically light up from inside to out with the coming home/ leaving home function embody the progressive taillight design.

The expressive exterior is accentuated by the RS-specific exterior colors Kyalami Green and Kemora Gray, the new metallic paints Ascari Blue and Progressive Red, and, for the first time, Daytona Gray in a matt finish. The Singleframe and diffuser have a black finish, with a choice of high-gloss or matt. Continuing this theme, the RS 31, 2 comes with matt-black 19-inch aluminum cast wheels in a 5-Y-spoke design as standard. Optionally, the rims are available in the motorsport design familiar from the RS 3 performance edition, with ten striking cross spokes, either in matt dark gray or in glossy metallic black in bicolor design. Even more individuality is offered by the carbon and high-gloss black packages, which adorn the front air intakes, the side skirts, and the blade above the diffuser. These are complemented by wing mirror covers in body color, black, or carbon.

Rich, dark interior with flat-top and flat-bottom steering wheel and RS bucket seats

 

In the interior, too, which is dominated by dark color tones, everything is geared for performance, with the new steering wheel, RS sport or bucket seats, carbon features, and sporty displays. Flattened above and below, the steering wheel has a substantially sportier look. Whether in perforated leather as standard or optional Dinamica with 12 o’clock marker in accent color, it fits proper to the hand when cornering the RS 31, 2 around sharp bends. Meanwhile, the optional RS bucket seats give even better support. The seat center panel with RS honeycomb stitching is made of the microfiber fabric Dinamica, which is combined with Pearl Nappa leather on the side bolsters. Beneath the headrest, the black tapered insert features a large RS badge and, like the matt carbon rear of the seat backrest, emphasizes the sportiness of the RS 31, 2.

 

New light features, effect paint, and carbon

The standard contour and ambient lighting illuminate the new design features: the storage box in front of the flatter-designed shifter, the center console with cup holders, and the doors. A delightful night-time feature is the so-called planar lighting, whereby a light source in the door panel back-lights hundreds of lasered rhombus shapes of various sizes, which dynamically light up when locking and unlocking the RS 31, 2. This underscores the sporty-evocative design. The door handles, air vents as well as the cover clip of the steering wheel and the shift paddles are finished in an anthracite effect paint, which shimmers according to the light conditions. In addition to the standard two-piece version in palladium grey with carbon insert, there is also a one-piece RS-specific trim strip in matt carbon and a new variant in black Dinamica as decor inlays. Furthermore, the microfiber material is available to order for the door and center armrests.

The design packages in red and green add touches of color to the seat belts, seat shoulders, and air vents. Additionally, the contrast stitching on the seats, center armrest, door armrests, steering wheel, and the 12 o’clock marker is done in the respective color. The same goes for the floor mats in black velour, which are also adorned by RS lettering.

RS displays with focus on performance

The 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus with Sport, Performance, and Runway views was already standard. In Runway mode, speed is visualized in reverse order, with the highest revs in the foreground and idling speed in the background. These features are now joined by the new rev counter, which prominently displays the revolutions per minute in the center of the instrument cluster. In addition, there are displays for power output, torque, g-forces, acceleration, and lap times. In manual transmission mode, the RS-specific blinking shift indicator changes the rpm display from green to yellow to red, motorsports-style, to indicate the ideal time to change gears. On top of this, the temperature ranges of coolant, torque splitter, brakes, engine oil and transmission oil are shown in color on the 10.1-inch touch display in the instrument panel. Optionally, tire pressures can also be displayed. Furthermore, the RS 31, 2 now features an app store with many applications that can be used directly on the vehicle display. The selected contents are installed on the RS 31, 2 infotainment system – independently of the smartphone.

HEARING: five-cylinder engine with more distinctive sound

The Audi RS 31, 2 is powered by the legendary 2.5 TFSI engine from Audi Sport with 294 kW (400 PS) and maximum torque of 500 Newton meters. This means the RS 3 (Combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 9.5–9.1 (24.8– 25.8 US mpg); combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 217–207 (349.2–333.1 g/mi); CO2-class: G) accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 290 km/h. Numerous motorsport successes make the award-winning five-cylinder engine one of the most evocative at Audi and make driving the RS 31, 2 an incomparable experience. In particular this is due to its unique sound, which is based on the signature 1-2-4-5-3 firing sequence. Adjacent and non-adjacent cylinders fire alternately providing a forceful rhythm and character, suitably orchestrated by the twin RS exhaust system with variable flap control. Press the red-ringed engine start/stop button, and the throaty sound of the five-cylinder engine rings out – more voluminous and even more distinctive in the Audi drive select modes dynamic, RS Performance, and RS Torque Rear. In addition, the exhaust flap control was optimized in the rpm range between 2,200 and 3,500 revolutions. In this way, the five-cylinder generates a consistent and fuller-bodied sound no matter which mode is selected. Audi Sport thus enhances the emotional driving experience in the top model of the A3 family – especially in conjunction with the optional RS Sport exhaust system.

FEELING: Enhanced vehicle dynamics through optimized cornering

For proof that the RS 31, 2 is fast on straights, we need only look at its acceleration stats, which continue to outstrip those of its core competitors. Cornering, by contrast, is difficult to express in numbers. The driving feel is much more important here. So much so, in fact, that Frank Stippler set a new lap record on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

The Audi Sport racing and development driver set a time of 7:33.123 minutes, beating the previous record in this class by more than five seconds. His success means the RS 31, 2 is once again the fastest compact car on the 20.832-kilometer race track in the Eifel.

The basis for the impressively high driving dynamics is the interaction of the torque splitter with its fully variable torque distribution between the rear wheels, electronic stability control, wheel-selective torque control (brake torque vectoring), and the adaptive dampers of the RS sport suspension. These components are relevant to lateral dynamics and are networked in the modular driving dynamics controller, where data synchronization occurs. Thanks to a further developed algorithm, they react even more acutely to the respective driving situations. Depending on the Audi drive select mode chosen, the driver can make the RS 31, 2 more agile earlier and in a more controlled manner. When the coefficient of friction is low, the interaction of these systems also ensures increased stability.

Higher cornering speeds

The RS 31, 2 now performs even better in bends, avoids understeer at the entrance to the corner, and turns in more willingly thanks to fine-tuning - including to brake torque vectoring. Thanks to the finely dosed brake interventions on the inside wheels, the compact sports car follows the corner’s radius more precisely than before, both in under partial load and on overrun, and it can be positioned earlier and better for exiting the curve from the apex. In other words, the driver can accelerate the RS 31, 2 sooner and steer it through the bend at higher speeds. The increased lateral dynamics are particularly impressive on the racetrack - in full intensity with ESC deactivated.

Evolved oversteer

The improved algorithm is also driving an evolution in oversteer. Previously, oversteer was generated primarily by increasing the load requirement – in other words, stepping on the throttle. Now, oversteer is easier to initiate in the RS 31, 2 via the steering angle. This allows the driver to obtain the same drift angle faster.

Quick access via steering wheel button

If you want to activate the Performance mode, which is specially designed for the racetrack, you can do so by pressing the left satellite button. The button with the checkered flag icon is new, as is the red RS button on the right steering wheel spoke, which offers quick access to RS Individual mode.

New standard tire with high grip

A new standard C-rated tire provides enhanced everyday comfort with higher lateral support. Specially tuned for the RS 31, 2, it offers excellent grip on both dry and wet surfaces and precise handling over the entire speed range. The Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tires are still available as an option.

SMELLING: The unmistakable smell of excellence

The RS 31, 2 meets premium standards not only when it comes to its visual and tactile qualities: One of the most subtle yet most immediate experiences when buying a car is the aroma that greets your nose when you open the doors of your new Audi for the first time. Quality you cannot see but which is a constant companion.

So that the driving experience in the sporty compact model becomes an experience for all the senses, Audi also has exceptional standards for smell in the interior. The aroma comprises natural smells of high-grade materials, such as the high-quality leather and the pleasant inherent odor of selected polymers.

RS sports seats of Fine Nappa leather or the new RS bucket seats with high Pearl Nappa leather content and the standard leather steering wheel diffuse an odor of nature and authenticity in the RS 31, 2. To this end, various quality measures must be implemented in the manufacturing process – from the selection of the leather to the tanning agents to the finish. All interior components – some 200 per vehicle – are chemically analyzed and evaluated. They are heated in a special chamber, then the air is analyzed. This lasts two to three hours per component. Once the testing of all individual components has been completed, the interplay of the various materials is tested in the Audi itself. After all, this is where all the materials come together, and they should smell nice in combination – under all climatic conditions. For example, heaters fitted to the outside simulate temperatures on hot summer days. The resulting odors are evaluated by a team of five chemists in relation to their type and intensity, ensuring that the characteristic new car smell of an Audi meets its customers' high standards.

TASTING: a recipe for success for over ten years

Audi Sport gives the RS 31, 2 many ingredients for full enjoyment, such as the five-cylinder turbo engine, torque splitter, new standard tires, and semi-slicks. As all good chefs know, we eat with our eyes first. The RS 31, 2 has been garnished with wheels in motorsport design, carbon and black packages, RS bucket seats, and a steering wheel flattened at the top and bottom. The RS 31, 2 is a recipe for success.

From the beginning, the compact sports car has stood for innovation and excitement at the highest level. When the first generation went out to dealers in the spring of 2011, the RS 3, with its powerful 340 PS five-cylinder engine, had no competitors. The bumpers, sills, and wheels clearly distinguished the first RS 3, which at the time was available only as a five-door hatchback, from the A3. Moreover, it was impressively fast and offered driving dynamics with maximum precision and assurance.

The second generation, which rolled off the production lines from 2015 to 2020, saw a sedan added to the portfolio in 2017. With its signature 1-2-4-5-3 firing sequence, the 2.5 TFSI matured into an RS 3 perennial – initially with 367 PS and then with 400 PS after the product upgrade in 2017. The faster-shifting seven-gear dual-clutch transmission, in conjunction with quattro all-wheel drive, ensured maximum driving enjoyment.

The third generation of the RS 3 Sportback2 and the second generation of the RS 3 Sedan1 were launched in 2021. With 400 PS and an increase in torque to 500 Nm, the five-cylinder engine was more powerful than ever before and beat all competitors for acceleration. Thanks to the first-ever torque splitter used in an Audi, which replaced the previous rear axle differential with the upstream multi-plate clutch package, it also attained a new level of lateral dynamics.

This garnered the RS 31, 2 various international awards, including Car of the Year 2022 from Top Gear in Italy, Best Performance Car 2022 from Motor1 in the United States, and back-to-back victories in 2022 and 2023 in the sport auto readers’ choice award in Germany.

The popularity of the model is also clearly reflected in its numbers. Since its market launch in 2011, almost 80,000 units of the compact sports car have come off the production lines, most of them last year. And the success story continues. The new RS 3 Sportback2 and Sedan1 models, manufactured at the Audi plant in Ingolstadt, will be at dealers from October and available to order from the end of August. Prices for the RS 3 Sportback2 start at 66,000 euros in Germany. The additional charge for the sedan1 version is 2,000 euros.
